Report Examines Patient Health and Relation to County

Posted on: 3/10/2010

A recent report provides a revealing look at patient health by examining how it relates to the patient’s home county. The report, released by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, is the first-ever county-level analysis of people's health status and factors affecting it.

The study grouped the healthiest county from each of the 50 states and each state's least-healthy county, and found wide disparities between these groups. For example, residents of the 50 least-healthy counties are 60% more likely to be admitted to a hospital for preventable conditions than are people in the healthiest counties. Researchers also found that 80% of the least-healthy counties are rural.
