Obama Delays Trip, House & Senate Democrats Work to Pass Health Care Legislation

Posted on: 3/12/2010

President Obama announced today that he will delay his trip overseas, originally scheduled for next week, after the Senate parliamentarian indicated yesterday that before a compromise health care bill can be finalized, House Democrats will have to approve a revised version of the bill that many Democrats are not fond of.

The White House gave Congress a March 18th deadline to complete negotiations and pass a bill. Democratic congressional leaders had asked the president to delay his trip until after next week’s vote so he could make a personal appeal to House Democrats to vote for the legislation. The president did so, and has delayed his trip until March 21st to try and smooth things over between the two chambers.

If this new deadline is met, the Senate would commence work on the "fixes" bill on March 22nd, with a goal of moving it through the House through the reconciliation process, which would block opponents of the legislation from conducting a filibuster, and allow it to pass without the normally required 60-vote super majority. Significant controversy has arisen regarding using the reconciliation process with this legislation.
