The United Kingdom Introduces Plan to Penalize Hospitals for Readmissions

Posted on: 6/9/2010

According to a recent BBC News article, a new government plan has been introduced in the United Kingdom, which will assess financial penalties to Hospitals if patients are readmitted as an emergency within 30 days of being discharged.

The plan was unveiled yesterday in a speech by Andrew Lansley, the country’s new health secretary, and is designed to address a dramatic increase in the number of emergency department readmissions over the past 10 years – from 359,719 in 1998-1999 to 546,354 in 2007-2008. During his speech, Lansley stated that Hospitals in England will be paid for initial treatment but not paid again if a patient returns with a related problem.
