Joint Program Developed to Improve Palliative Care for Veterans

Posted on: 7/6/2010

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has announced it will partner with the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium to educate its nurse workforce on how to better provide palliative care. The three-year project will be jointly administered by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and City of Hope, a biomedical research, treatment and educational institution in southern California. The project will train 600 nurse educators through national “train-the-trainer” courses.

According to a recent AACN press release, more than 54,000 American Veterans die each month, and the number of Vietnam-era veterans over 65 will continue to grow through 2034. The goal of the initiative is to improve hospice and palliative care for this patient population.
