CMS Document Provides Insight Into Level of Care Challenges

Patients’ understanding of level of care presents a number of challenges to hospital case managers across the country. This topic has been frequently discussed amongst ACMA members on Learning Link, and is addressed in a recent pamphlet released by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
In December 2009, CMS released an informative document for Medicare beneficiaries entitled, Are You a Hospital Inpatient or Outpatient? If You Have Medicare – Ask! The document explains how level of care can affect Medicare reimbursement, and uses hospital scenarios to show the difference between inpatient status and outpatient status, as well as the financial implications for patients.
