Study Examines Hospitals’ Effectiveness in Protecting Patients from HAI

Posted on: 2/8/2010

A recent study released by Consumer Reports provides a revealing look into hospitals’ effectiveness in protecting patients from healthcare-associated infections (HAIs). The study focuses on bloodstream infections introduced through the large intravenous catheters that deliver medication, nutrition, and fluids to patients in intensive care. According to recent estimates, these central-line infections account for 15% of all hospital infections, and are responsible for at least 30% of the 99,000 annual hospital-infection-related deaths.

To perform the study, central-line infection data for intensive-care units at 926 hospitals in 43 states was collected and compared. Data came from state reports and from the Leapfrog Group, a nonprofit organization that has worked with large employers nationwide to collect and disseminate quality information on individual hospitals for over a decade.
