Session 1: Reflections: Physician Leader Beating Cancer

ABSTRACT:
After 20 years as an academic physician leader, Dr. Zaas’ life changed overnight. The impact of personal illness changed his life and future perspectives as a physician. The presentation will give insight on how a potentially terminal illess diagnosis profoundly impacted his leadership and hopefully will help benefit others.

  2. Optimize the care experience for cancer patients and caregivers

Session 2: Accessing VA Benefits and Services

ABSTRACT:
A synopsis of the roles and functions of the VA Medical Center and its outpatient clinics to include an overview of VA benefits. We will discuss pension aid and attendance, service-connected compensation, durable medical equipment, support services for the visually impaired, transportation, home-health assistance, assisted living and residential group homes, in-home respite care, Skilled nursing facilities, private burial benefits and access to the National Cemetery. How to pursue benefits and services through the VA, professional advocates, Veteran services organizations and other free county resources. This discussion will also include a rundown of services from enhanced Medicare and Medicaid providers, local Area Agencies on Aging, the Department of Health and Human Services and other government, as well as, community-based organizations.

Session 3: Utilization/Case Management Redesign to Improve Outcomes in a Population Health Focused Environment

Case Management/Utilization Review Departments will be those most relied upon to bring success to organizations given the many regulatory changes pushing population health forward. The Review staff must redesign its work to meet the growing number of federal regulations that impact performance and outcomes. This session will provide you with the tools and information needed to redesign processes, increase work performance, positively impact patient outcomes, and make your organization a success in the area population health.

ABSTRACT:
LGBT Cultural Competence Training is an educational experience that promotes understanding and awareness of LGBT elders and their families. Personal stories and experiences are used throughout this interactive training to inform and educate staff and constituents to create respect and dignity for clients regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity and other differences.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Increase understanding of diversity among elders, their families and caregivers
  2. Increase awareness of environments that are characterized by inclusion, respect and dignity
  3. Practice inclusive communication skills with clients who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender, and with their families and friends

Session 5: Elder Law: What Is It and Why Does It Matter?

An introduction of the practice of elder law and the difference in elder law from other legal practice areas. The presentation will include an overview of qualification rules for long term care Medicaid, PACE Medicaid and special assistance benefits. It will also include a discussion of what clients benefit from these programs and the planning strategies that elder law attorneys regularly assist clients in implementing to qualify for government benefits

  1. Understand what an elder law attorney is and how to find one
  2. Understand the qualification rules for Medicaid and special assistance
  3. Be able to spot some of the planning opportunities that are available to clients
