Session 1: Yippee! Another Day in Paradise …Driving Negativity Out of the Workplace

Liz Jazwiec, RN
President
Lizjaz · Oak Lawn, IL

ABSTRACT:
Have you ever worked with a crab? You know, the type of people that complain about everything—even free food? Then you understand that continuous workplace negativity saps the energy out of an organization and distracts everyone from work and productivity. It is not okay to come to work every day in a bad mood because the job is hard! This is the message that Liz Jazwiec will discuss by telling her personal story, laced with her notorious humor and effective tools to manage morale, eliminate victim thinking and have fun. Using real-life examples and anecdotes from her bestselling book, Eat THAT Cookie!, Jazwiec will provide insights to make positive thinking work for you and the shadow you cast on others. She will conclude with a straightforward approach to the connection between job satisfaction and success, creating an enjoyable workplace and choosing to be happy.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Recognize the relationship between patient satisfaction and professional pride
  2. Explain how judging affects everyone
  3. Discover methods you can use to improve morale

Session 2: UM and CMS Updates – A Focus on Performance Improvement

Simon Ahtaridis, MD
National Clinical Advisor and CMO
Sound Physicians Advisory Services · Tacoma, WA

ABSTRACT:
Hospital inpatient reimbursement continues to be at risk whether or not third-party payers are actively auditing for recoupment. This financial risk is coupled with new risk-based models of care (ACOs, Bundles Payment Care Initiatives, etc.) that create a shared responsibility for keeping patients healthy, not just treating them when they are sick. This session will focus on value-driven performance improvement in care coordination and bringing back-end information about denials and DRG validation to the front-end interventions by case management and physician advisors to drive key metric improvements

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Connect care coordination activity to key metric improvement in Denials, CMI, LOS, and Observation percentage
  2. Implement new solutions to reduce process waste and focus on pain points that drive the greatest value
  3. Understand the extended scope of onsite advisors to improve performance improvement metrics

Session 3: What You Need to Know When Treating Veterans

Kym Grey, LCSW
Transition and Care Management Program Manager
VA San Diego Healthcare System · San Marcos, CA

ABSTRACT:

This session will provide a brief introduction to the Branches of the Military and definition of a Veteran.  An overview will be provided of the Veterans Administration including Veterans Healthcare Administration (VHA), Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA), National Cemetery Administration, and Vet Centers.  Attendees will receive an inside look at the complex nature of VHA and VBA and how these two systems work together to serve our Veterans.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Define who is a Veteran
  2. Review services available through VBA and who to call to initiate an application for VA Benefits
  3. Learn who to call to initiate VA Healthcare
  4. Identify at least three specialty clinics within the VHA

Session 4: Health Care in the Golden State - Impact for Case Management

Pat Blaisdell, M.A., M.S., FACHE
Vice President, Continuum of Care
California Hospital Association · Sacramento, CA

ABSTRACT:

As ongoing changes in the health care system continue and escalate, the role and influence of the case manager are in the spotlight. Case managers at all levels of care are being called upon to support and participate in organizational changes. This presentation will provide an update on ongoing implementation of health care reform, as well as on current state-level and regulatory initiatives. Implications for case managers in the hospital setting, as well as the partnership with post-acute care, will be discussed.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Identify status of implementation of federal health care reform
  2. Identify current state legislative and regulatory issues impacting case management
  3. Discuss implications for case management and care coordination across the continuum of care

Session 5: Evaluating Danger, Risk, and Safety when Creating a Care Plan

Viki Kind, MA
Clinical Bioethicist
Kind Ethics · Granada Hills, CA

ABSTRACT:

It is difficult to know when to step in and protect versus stepping back and allowing people to be in charge of their own decisions.  The field of bioethics provides professionals with a structure and guidelines for evaluating and managing danger.  Attendees will learn how to use the “Evaluating Risk Formula” to help evaluate the risks.  By balancing the person’s quality of life with the dangers of living that life, professionals can feel more confident that they are treating the person with dignity and respect.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Identify the questions to ask when evaluating the dangers
  2. Demonstrate how to use the “Evaluating the Risk Formula”
  3. Discuss how to put into action the Shared Decision-Making Model, Sliding Scale for Decision Making, and Assent Tool
