Selected Topics on Recovery 2024: The Latest Findings from Addiction Neuroscience By: Dr. Kevin T. McCauley, M.D., Senior Fellow, The Meadows

Session Description: This lecture serves as a primer on the current neuroscience and public health research about addiction or Substance Use Disorder (SUD) for people in or seeking recovery, their families, friends and co-workers, and public policy professionals. Dr. McCauley will cover the major theories used to explain addiction with special emphasis on two important areas of recent discovery: epigenetics and psychoneuroimmunology. Much of this research validates the lived experiences of people with addiction, and the lecture seeks to improve the general public's understanding of those experiences. This lecture will highlight topics such as barriers to the use of Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD), the evolving epidemiology of cannabis use the United States after legalization, and the importance of nicotine cessation in recovery.
Session Objectives:
1. Attendees will learn about public health research for addiction or substance abuse disorder.
2. Attendees will learn major theories used to explain addiction.
3. Attendees will learn about opioids and cannabis.
Session Presenter: Dr. Kevin McCauley is a Senior Fellow at The Meadows of Wickenburg, Arizona. Dr. McCauley wrote and directed two films: “Memo to Self” about the concepts of recovery management, and “Pleasure Unwoven” about the neuroscience of addiction which won the 2010 Michael Q. Ford Award for Journalism from the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers. Kevin lives with his wife, Kristine, in Sedona, Arizona.
