Secretary of Health and Human Services Confirmed by Senate

Posted on: 1/25/2018

Yesterday, the Senate voted 55-43 to confirm Alex Azar, a former Eli-Lily executive, to become the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). Azar will take over an agency facing significant national issues, including reforming the Affordable Care Act in a manner consistent with President Trump’s views, rising drug prices, and an opioid epidemic. He will officially take over the agency today, replacing former Secretary Tom Price who resigned 117 days ago amid a scandal over his use of private-jet travel for official business. Prior to his role as a top Eli-Lily executive, Azar served as a top official at HHS during the George W. Bush administration.
