Participant Level - Intermediate, 1.5 CE Credits for RN and SW
Abstract: Focus will be on the relationship of values in the practice of caring for patients and in understanding one’s own personal ethical style.  Three principles of Medical Ethics will be reviewed:  Justice, Autonomy, and Beneficence.  There will be case presentations to aid in the identification of the role of values and personal ethical styles in the case manager’s approach to specific ethical situations as well as the identification of primary and secondary Ethics principles in specific cases.

After attending this workshop; you will be able to:

  • Describe the relationship of values in the practice of caring for patients
  • Identify one’s own personal ethical style
  • Define 3 principles of Medical Ethics and the relationship to case management practice
  • Analyze patient situations using key concepts for Medical Ethicistic


Rev.  Msgr. John N. Fell, S. T. D.
Rev. Msgr. John N. Fell was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Metuchen in 1988. He has served in parishes in Hillsborough, Old Bridge, and Whitehouse Station. Since 2002 he has served as Pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish in Bernardsville. Msgr. Fell serves as the Episcopal Vicar for the Healthcare Apostolate for the Metuchen Diocese. He serves on the Board of Governors, Ethics Committees, and various other committees of the St. Peter’s Healthcare System in New Brunswick. He has taught as an adjunct faculty member at the College of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station. Msgr. Fell did his doctoral studies in Moral Theology at the Accademia Alfonsiana in Rome, writing his dissertation on “The Contributions of Christian Faith to Biomedical Ethics in the Writings of Stanley Hauerwas, Edmund Pellegrino, and Kevin O’Rourke.” In 2011, Pope Benedict XVI named him Chaplain to His Holiness with the title of Monsignor.

Amar S. Bukhari, M.D. 
Dr. Amar S. Bukhari is the Associate Chairman in the Department of Medicine, the Chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine, Saint Peter’s University Hospital and chairman of its Ethics Committee. His tenure at Saint Peter’s started in 1997. He is a member of various committees including Sepsis, Transfusion, Anticoagulation/Venous Thromboembolism, Pharmacy and Therapeutics, Internal Medicine Review, Pneumonia, Safety and Allied Health Professional. Dr. Bukhari also serves as the medical director for Respiratory Care, Adult Intensive Care Units and the Claims Review Committee. His areas of interest include care of pregnant patients with pulmonary diseases, advanced care in asthma, care at the end-of-life and critical care in obstetrics. In addition to his clinical and administrative work, he enjoys teaching students, physicians in residency training, and nurses.

PIM - Postgraduate Institute for Medicine is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the ANCC -American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation and has approved this session for 1.5 CE’s.

An Application has been made for 1.5 Ethics CE credits for this workshop.
CE Certificate will be emailed within 10 days, to social workers who sign in and out of the workshop and complete a course evaluation. The evaluation form will be distributed upon check in of the workshop and should be turned in to staff members at the end of the workshop. Attendees must attendee the full presentation from 6 pm-730 pm to receive CE credit, no partial credits will be given.
