An Alternative Choice for the Care of the Unfunded Latin American National

Abstract
This session will discuss the process to determine which candidates are eligible for repatriation to most Latin American countries. Attendees will learn how a care plan is developed for acute care facilities and the various steps to work with the family and patients to accommodate care in the country of origin. Additionally, the session will cover navigating the legal process, including travel documents and cooperating with foreign consulates, arranging for transportation and identifying the appropriate facility and staff to care for the patient upon discharge. The aftercare sometimes arranged in the family home or other facilities will also be reviewed.


Learning Objectives:
1. Discuss option for patients to transfer to country of origin to receive care.
2. Review process steps.
3. Utilize case studies in order to evaluate current process and opportunity for practice change.
4. Identify key aspects to support longitudinal care.


Speaker
George Perez, MPH, FACHE, Senior VP, Network Development, MexCare
George Perez is a native of Northern California. His family is from the Los Altos region of Jalisco, Mexico. Both his parents worked as farm laborers and other common rolls of new immigrant families. George received his BS in Conservation and his MPH in Hospital Administration from UC Berkeley. During his career he has served as a senior executive, CEO at various Acute Care hospitals in both Arizona and California, and as Chief Operations Executive with a 20 site FQHC in California. He is currently the Senior Vice President of Network Development for MexCare, an organization supporting hospital case managers with difficult repatriation challenges.

Karen Vanaskie Scholarship Fund

Karen Vanaskie was one of case management's brightest and most dedicated professionals. She was serving as Secretary / Treasurer on the ACMA National Board of Directors at the time of her unexpected passing on June 21, 2024.

At the request of Karen's family, ACMA has set up the Karen Vanaskie Scholarship Fund. Karen was passionate about the need for case management certification. She actively supported her staff in pursuing the Accredited Case Manager (ACM) Certification. To continue her legacy, this scholarship fund will cover the cost of their ACM certification application fee for those to whom it is awarded. We believe this continues Karen's legacy.
