Building a Multi-Method, Evidence-Based, Standards-Driven Orientation Using COMPASS

Publication Date: 3/2/2015

Speakers: Sharon L. Smith, PhD, RN and Susan Maycock, DNP(c), MSN, RN, CNS-BC
Length: 1 hour

The implementation of a new care management model provides the perfect opportunity to affirm the professional standards used in case management, standardize the orientation/education required for the new model, and determine shared competencies to be achieved in new or revised roles. This presentation will explore how a large, academic health system used the implementation of a new model as an opportunity to create shared learning/knowledge among nurse case managers, acute care staff nurses, social workers and physicians by developing a core curriculum for care management built on the foundation of ACMA’s COMPASS orientation program. The speaker will also discuss additional items included in the organization’s core curriculum, such as: role transition, team work, technology and software training, and facilitated learning using on-line simulation and case studies. Facilitators and barriers to knowledge acquisition, application and role transition will also be addressed.
