ICD-10-CM/PCS High Level Overview

This session will provide a high level overview of ICD-10-CM/PCS for those who may not necessarily do coding but need to be aware of ICD-10-CM/PCS and the resources available. The session will help case managers to:
  • Understand the need and planning for ICD-10 as well as the differences, advantages, and similarities between ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM. 
  • Review major changes to coding conventions and guidelines in ICD-10-CM, in order to provide general knowledge of the new structure of an ICD-10-CM code. 
  • Gain a general understanding of the greater specificity in ICD-10-CM codes and its effects. 
  • Be aware of, at a high level, the major change to inpatient procedural coding (ICD-10-PCS) and new structure of an ICD-10-PCS code that hospitals will need to report for inpatient procedures. 
  • Obtain a general knowledge of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) ICD-10-CM code tables and indexes called General Equivalence Mappings (GEMS) that are being used to translate ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM codes.
